Racing to Higher Ground UNL Wind Ensemble Reading
Program notes: At the end of the spring semester of my junior year of college, I was
struggling with how overwhelming the end of the semester leading up to finals week was.
I kept trying to visualize something to look forward to in order to motivate myself to keep
doing my best in school. In my search for motivation, I decided that I wanted to write
something that made me feel triumphant when I listened to it and when I played it,
which led to the conceptualization of "Racing to Higher Ground". My biggest goal
with this piece was to make sure that each part was enjoyable to play so that
everyone in the ensemble could share in the suspense and overall triumph of the
piece. I was given the privilege of reading "Racing to Higher Ground" with my friends
in the University of Nebraska- Lincoln Wind Ensemble, conducted by Carolyn
Barber. To have made so many people smile because of something that I wrote is a
feeling I will always carry with me.
